Millennium Mileposts, positioned throughout the UK and Ireland.

In 1999 The Royal Bank of Scotland and Sustrans commissioned 1000 Millennium cast iron mileposts to four designs, for cycles routes through the UK, to mark the creation of the National Cycle Network. My design, “Tracks”, carries a poetic fragment of my own, and is inspired by the imprints left by cycle tyres as they pass by. The others are from the three other regions of the UK, "Fossil Tree" is by John Mills, "The Cockerel" by Iain McColl, and "Rowe Type" by Andrew Rowe. All posts can be found in all four countries.

“DOWN A WANDERING PATH
I HAVE TRAVELLED,
WHERE THE SETTING SUN
LIES UPON THE GROUND,
THE TRACKS ARE HARD AND DRY
SMOOTHENED WITH
THE WEATHER'S WEAR,
MY MIND DID MOVE
WITH THEM THAT HAD
BEFORE ME BEEN,
TRODDING DOWN THE GROUND
A TRACK FOR ME TO FOLLOW,
LEAVING MARKS FOR OTHERS
A SIGN FOR THEM TO FOLLOW.”
